Libraries elevate stories and writers through programs such as author talks and writing workshops.
In a celebration of Queensland's literary landscape, Western Downs Regional Council libraries hosted their annual Words Out West festival in mid-March. The main events were hosted on the weekend, with writing workshops, author talks and book signings delighting audiences.
This year, there was an incredible lineup of speakers from Li Cunxin and Matthew Condon to Hayley Scrivenor and Kell Woods. The Books and Bubbles session on Saturday evening was a highlight, as festival goers sipped on champagne, discussed literature with like-minded book lovers and mingled with authors. The special presenter, Stephanie Trethewey, gave an inspiring speech that foregrounded the importance of community, and the support libraries can provide to all. Council also runs writers’ retreats, contributing to deeper connections between writers.
For book lovers further East, Scenic Rim Regional Council also hosted their monthly Author Talk session. This month’s guest was Stella Quinn, the queen of Australian rural romance. For budding authors with burning questions for authors, Gold Coast City Council libraries’ writing workshops provide the support and motivation to cultivate their skills and connect with other writers in the community.
The programs such as those run by Western Downs, Scenic Rim and the Gold Coast highlight the crucial role libraries play in fostering a love for literature and supporting local writers.
