ISEA at State Library

By Michelle Brown | 9 July 2024

The 29th International Symposium on Electronic Art (ISEA), held in Brisbane, Australia from June 21-29, was a vibrant and intellectually stimulating event that brought together a diverse community of artists, academics, theorists, and technologists. The symposium, themed "Everywhen," explored the human perception of time from various cultural and technological perspectives, particularly focusing on First Nations' concepts of time and space.

This year's ISEA was notable for its emphasis on the First Nations' perspective on time, where past, present, and future coexist in a constant state of presence. This concept, known as "Everywhen," provided a rich thematic foundation for discussions, exhibitions, and performances throughout the symposium.

ISEA2024 featured an impressive lineup of activities, including cutting-edge exhibitions, thought-provoking panel discussions, innovative workshops, and captivating performances.

The symposium also provided a platform for exploring the intersection of art, science, and technology. Participants engaged in discussions on topics ranging from artificial intelligence and digital art to climate change and cultural heritage. This interdisciplinary approach fostered a rich exchange of ideas and inspired future innovations and collaborations.

Brisbane, proved to be an ideal host city for ISEA2024 with it's mild winter weather and easy access to the symposium and exhibiting artwork venues. With the city's cultural institutions, such as the State Library of Queensland and various local galleries, playing a significant role in the symposium's program.

The Edge at State Library played host to one of the symposium's signature artworks, Angie Abdilla's Meditation on Country.

The symposium not only showcased local and international talent but also highlighted Brisbane's growing reputation as a hub for creative and technological innovation. Overall, ISEA2024 was a landmark event that successfully bridged the gap between art and technology, offering a glimpse into the future of electronic art while honouring the rich cultural heritage of its host location.
