International Day of People with Disability (IDPWD)

The United Nations theme for International Day of People with Disability for 2018 is empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equality. Held on or around the 3rd December 2018, this day provides an opportunity to bring awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability.

This year marks the centenary of the end of the First World War. The 4th Invictus Games were held in Sydney from 21-27 October 2018. These games bring awareness internationally and empower people with disability. Invictus is Latin for “unconquered” or “undefeated”. The Invictus Games bring together injured, wounded and sick defence personnel to help aid in their recovery from physical and mental injuries.

The Invictus Games 2018 were an international adaptive multi-sport competition with 500 competitors from 18 nations competing in a range of adaptive sports. The games are for serving and former serving military personnel who have been wounded, injured or become ill during their military service. Through sports these unconquered competitors show they are able to overcome great adversity. They are a great inspiration to all. The Invictus Games has helped inspire not only People with Disability but also other people suffering from adversity. They bring awareness and show others that nothing is impossible - in line with the spirit of the ANZACs.

We provide equitable services to all clients using our facilities and resources by reducing barriers to access. Amongst many other services we have a number of reserved parking spaces for people with disability and a pick up and drop off zone at the front of the building. State Library has a range of adaptive technology and assistive devices to access our collections.
