Heroes and Villains and multicultural fun
By Administrator | 23 December 2016
Do you have children participating in the Summer Reading Club these holidays? The theme is 'Heroes and Villains' so I thought I would spend some time searching in the children’s books on level 2 at State Library of Queensland for some ideas to help inspire our young readers.
My first thought when I think of 'Heroes and Villains' is the Superheroes of modern movies, but browsing through the collection soon reminded me that heroes and villains have featured in stories from every country of the world since the dawn of time. Our cultural fabric is woven with them in the myths and legends that have been passed down for generations. SLQ has a large collection of myths and legends from many different countries of the world – in a quick browse I found stories from Japan, Papua New Guinea, Germany, Mexico and many more. There are also some quite old books in this collection as well, so if you are looking for the stories that you heard as a child SLQ may have just what you are looking for. Reading these stories is a great way to introduce children to different cultures and give them a wider view of the World.
To explore the theme even further, why not borrow some non-fiction books about the same country for children to browse or perhaps even use our recipe books to prepare some food from the corresponding country. SLQ is full of resources that can help to create fun and educational multi-cultural experiences for your children these holidays. You may be surprised to learn that myths and legends are catalogued in the non-fiction section of the library. You can find them in the children’s non-fiction on level 2 (CLG 398). Non-fiction books about the countries and recipe books are also available; you can find what you need in our online catalogue, OneSearch, or ask any of our friendly staff for assistance. These books are available for library members to borrow for up to 4 weeks so there is lots of time for children to immerse themselves in a different culture and enjoy the fun.
It’s almost like having an overseas holiday without even leaving home!
