The Edge Screens: Ian Poole Photographic Archive

By czimbler | 29 August 2025

Visit The Edge Screens during September and October to view a selection of images from the Ian Poole photographic archive.

A wonderful compilation of Queensland memories, this screen-based exhibition features just a small selection of the digitised images from State Library’s archive of photographic negatives and transparencies from leading Brisbane photographer Ian Poole.

Entry Screens

Ian Poole was born in 1945 and died in 2018. In his career he worked for some of the most prominent names in advertising including Leo Burnett, the Lucas Agency, and Garnsey Clemenger.

From 1972 to 1994 Ian worked as a leading commercial, architectural, advertising, and fashion photographer in Brisbane. The main portion of State Library's archive consists of some 100,000 negatives, the majority comprising black and white negative stock. There is also a collection of scrapbooks, press cuttings, colour transparencies, black and white prints and printed advertising material illustrating Ian's work.

Images include architectural and house interiors, images created in connection with advertising campaigns, fashions from stores such Cassell's, Bayard's and Bobo Boutique, and cultural and promotional events. The latter including images of cinema openings and car and boat shows. There are photographs of the Warana Festival and images of notable personalities including Governor Sir Colin Hannah, Ainsley Gotto, model Margo Mott, entrepreneur Jan Power and journalist Ken Lord. A Negative Index Book provided by Ian Poole, accompanies the archive.
