Digitised@SLQ - Nundah Ladies' Amateur Swimming Club Grand Entertainment, 1917

By JOL Admin | 9 January 2014

The Grand Entertainment organised by the Nundah Ladies' Amateur Swimming Club at the Nundah Shire Hall on Friday 3 August 1917 was similar to countless fundraising events held across Queensland during World War 1. State Library's searchable digital version of the concert handbill lists fourteen concert items with one ten-minute interval, all introduced by the national anthem and concluded with God Save the Queen.

Held in aid of the Red Cross Fund, the programme featured popular and comic songs of the day, including The Sunshine of your smile by Lilian Ray and Leonard Cooke, performed by Miss Jacklyn, and a Japanese love song by May Brahe and Madge Dickson, performed as a duet by Mrs Ashton and Mr Thorsburne.

Also featured on the programme were two comedy sketches: A Kitchen romance and  Mistaken identity.
