Crowd Giving

By Administrator | 30 May 2019

Part of the Queensland Library Foundation’s annual program since 2016, Crowd Giving invites donations from $100 per person towards a collective fund. With each donation comes the opportunity to attend and vote at a pitch event where three State Library teams present projects seeking community support to bring them to fruition.

A fundraising initiative led by philanthropist Courtney Talbot, Crowd Giving brings together around 100 people who are inspired by the possibilities created by State Library of Queensland.

In 2017 the project that gained the majority of votes from donors was the proposed remaking of an intricate braille globe from the State Library collection. Created in Queensland in the 1950s by Richard Frank Tunley MBE (1878¬–1968), known as the ‘fairy godfather of blind children’, the globe was on display during the year in State Library’s Magnificent Makers: Queensland inventors and their curious creations exhibition in the Philip Bacon Heritage Gallery.

2017 Crowd Giving support enabled State Library to use photogrammetry and three-dimensional printing technologies to create a replica of the Tunley’s original globe, accompanied by detailed digital plans and learning notes available for sharing internationally.

The winning 2018 Crowd Giving pitch was for a Queensland Writers Fellowship. Each year since 2013, three established Queensland authors have been awarded a Queensland Writers Fellowship to produce new work and progress their careers. Recipients receive a cash prize and career development support through the Queensland Writers Centre. The Queensland Writers Fellowship funded by Crowd Giving supporters will make a lasting impact on a mid-career author by affording them the time, space and income to focus on their craft.

Thanks to the additional generosity of donors on the night, and the matched funding offered by our valued partner Perpetual, all three of the 2018 Crowd Giving projects were funded.

Queensland Library Foundation is thankful for the tremendous support of these initiatives, and the opportunity to share just some of State Library’s innovative work with community members.

The 2019 Crowd Giving event will be held on 6 August at State Library. Head to the Foundation’s website and sign up for our e-newsletter to receive more information.
