Audio At The Edge: The sound of community

By mwyllie | 15 February 2024

People in recording studio

On the first Wednesday of each month The Edge Recording Studio hosts the Audio At The Edge meet-up.  This event offers participants a chance to learn and experiment with audio production techniques, share knowledge, and provide constructive feedback on mixes and song arrangements.

A Practical Learning Experiences

These sessions are characterised by practical, hands-on learning and informative discussions. Each meet-up often focuses on a particular aspect of sound production, discussions on the music industry or unpacking the songwriting process. For instance, an evening might be devoted to experimenting with various microphone recording techniques.  A collaborative and hands-on experience, attendees set up microphones, test placements, and then listen to and analyse the results together. It's a process that demonstrates how different approaches can change the sound and feel of a recording.

In addition to microphone techniques, the meet-ups often feature sessions on the latest additions to the studio's equipment. This could mean getting to grips with a new microphone pre-amp, understanding the role of hardware compressors, creating sounds with an analogue synthesiser, or exploring the capabilities of new software plugins. These sessions offer attendees the chance to get firsthand experience with equipment and tools that might be new to them, guided by the insights and experiences of others.

Collaborative Feedback and Creative Exchange

Audio At The Edge also provides the opportunity for attendees to share their own work.  Whether it's a mix they've been struggling with or a new song arrangement, participants can receive feedback from the collective providing a supportive and constructive environment where everyone, regardless of their skill level, feels comfortable sharing and contributing. It's through this exchange that participants receive insights into their own work but also learn by listening to others' perspectives and critiques.

Audio At The Edge offers more than just a chance to learn about audio production; it's an opportunity to be part of a collaborative community where knowledge, experience, and creativity are shared. Whether you're new to the world of audio or an experienced hand, these meet-ups provide a space to experiment, receive feedback, and connect with others who share your passion. So, come and join us at the next Audio At The Edge and be a part of this exciting, collaborative journey in sound exploration.
