APDL Weekend Update!

By Chenoa Pettrup | 19 October 2013

What an amazing few weeks we've had here at APDL HQ! It's been a time for meeting new faces, tackling some interesting design challenges and devouring a bunch of new books!

First up, we were lucky enough to go and visit the latest batch of design students at CATC late last week. It's always so inspiring to meet people who are about to embark on their design education. Introducing them to the APDL is always a treat and I'll hopefully see some of them again in the design lounge soon!

On Monday, we were so excited to have John Thackara visit the APDL to host the SUSTAINABLE TOURISM: THE NEXT GENERATION talk and workshop as a part of the Think Outside Series. It was a great introduction to new thinking about eco-tourism. Four teams of creative thinkers and tourism professionals got together to investigate the concept of "leave things better" travel. Each team developed some incredible and practical ideas for the participating tourism companies to take with them. Eden will be posting a full rundown of the event on Design Online shortly. Be sure to check that out for a comprehensive look at the events and outcomes of the day.

Lastly, the new books have been pouring in at the APDL, with a fresh batch of new releases hitting the shelves in the design lounge! A particular highlight has been A Map of the World. Gestalten has described it as "a compelling collection of work by a new generation of original and sought-after designers, illustrators and map makers. This work showcases specific regions, characterises local scenes, generates moods and tells stories beyond sheer navigation". If you're a fan of information design, maps or beautiful illustrations, you'll love this book!
