Adult Learners’ Week 1-8 September

By Fiona Dixon | 31 August 2015

1-8 September is Adult Learner’s Week – an ideal time to learn something new, begin a course or boost your current skills. State Library of Queensland is a great place to get started!

Adult Learners’ Week evolved from a desire to combat the lack of fundamental universal education, leaving millions of people, the majority of them women, illiterate. The first Adult Learners' Week began in the UK in 1992, with the first Australian Adult Learners’ Week held in 1995, promoting and inspiring lifelong learning. In 1999, UNESCO's General Conference approved International Adult Learners' Week to encourage connections between various national activities, and to promote sharing, cooperation and learning at an international level.

This particular week aims to celebrate adult learning and increase awareness of the multitude of learning opportunities available to adults in Australia. This is an ideal opportunity to make the most of excellent resources available freely through organisations such as State Library of Queensland.

One such resource is lynda.com - a web-based video service, giving SLQ members free access to over 3,000 top-quality courses and 136,000 video tutorials for learning the latest commercial software, creative and business skills. Courses cover topics such as web design and development, business and career skills, software, social media, 3D and animation, audio, music and photography. The state-wide subscription allows all Queenslanders unlimited access to the online courses from any compatible desktop or portable device, whether on a library computer, at their home or business or on the go. To start learning, go to the information about lynda.com on SLQ’s eresources page and follow the easy steps to sign up.

SLQ also offers access to printed and online resources on thousands of topics, suitable for all levels from beginner to advanced. To find out what we offer in your favourite subject area, search our One Search catalogue or browse through our list of eresources.

The wealth of educational resources available today makes it easy to find something to suit everyone - whether you choose to learn for professional development, improving job or promotional prospects or just for personal interest.
