Laser cutter

The Edge at State Library hosts two Trotec Speedy 300 Laser cutter/engravers available to book for State Library members can access for free during Open lab after completing an induction or with staff support at Hack the evening

These laser cutters can cut and engrave a variety of materials with high accuracy and precision. Create items such as boxes, jewellery, stencils, and models.

Access 

Explore and get creative during Open lab at The Edge, open every Wednesday and Saturday from noon to 5 pm, and Thursdays from 1:30–8 pm. 

You can also join our Hack the evening community meetup every Thursday from 5 pm, where staff are on hand to help you access equipment as capacity and demand permit. 

While State Library is pausing standard inductions during July and August, the laser cutter will remain accessible during hack the evening, with a specialist facilitator available to assist with short projects in short time slots (first-come, first-served basis).

Equipment and software

Materials

You are encouraged to make use of the materials that The Edge has tested and keep in stock for purchase such as plywood and acrylic in a variety of thicknesses and colours. 

If you wish to purchase materials externally and bring them in to use with The Edge laser cutters, please email appliedcreativity@slq.qld.gov.au with any SDS (safety data sheets) or to speak to our lab supervisors about your options.

To gain booking permissions, you'll need to complete an induction.

Our Trotec Speedy 300 Laser cutters have a maximum bed size of 730 x 430mm. Our materials are usually A2 or 300 x 600 mm in size.

Our materials can be purchased through The Brink cafe at The Edge. Check out our materials and pricing.

All materials to be used with the Lasers must have an SDS (Safety Data Sheet) and be approved by Applied Creativity staff.
