State Library members can book and use The Edge's 3D printers for free after completing an induction.
Access
Explore and get creative during Open lab at The Edge, open every Wednesday and Saturday from noon to 5 pm, and Thursdays from 1:30–8 pm.
You can also join our Hack the evening community meetup every Thursday from 5 pm, where staff are on hand to help you access equipment as capacity and demand permit.
While State Library is pausing standard inductions during July and August, the recording studio will remain accessible during hack the evening starting 18 June, with a specialist facilitator available to assist with short projects in 1-hour slots (first-come, first-served basis).

Equipment and software
- The Edge has 5 Prusa Mk4 3D printers and 4 Prusa Mk3 printers.
- The Prusa Mk4 printers have a maximum build volume of approximately 250 × 210 × 210 mm.
- All 3D printers are equipped with filament dryer boxes.
- Use the Digital Media Lab computers or Open Lab laptops to prepare your prints.
- PrusaSlicer is available for slicing and preparing 3D print files.
- A range of 3D modelling software is also available.
Materials
The typical filament provided for use is white or black coloured PLA+ (polylactic acid). Outside filaments are not allowed to be brought in and used without talking with Open lab staff. Please email appliedcreativity@slq.qld.gov.au with any questions.

To gain booking permissions, you'll need to complete an induction.
The Edge currently has five Prusa Mk4 Printers. They have a maximum build volume of approximately 250 x 210 x 210 mm.
If you notice any issues, your first step should always be to pause the print job.
Then seek assistance from Open Lab staff.
Pause the print and ask Open Lab staff for assistance.
Try the following:
- Ensure you are using the correct build plate for the filament type
- Check that the build plate is clean and level
- Adjust the first layer Z height if needed
Try the following:
- Check with staff to tighten belts and pulleys
- Ensure the printing environment is stable and free from movement
- Verify the print file has been generated correctly
Try the following:
- Ask staff to clear any nozzle blockages
- Ensure the filament path is smooth and unobstructed
- Ask staff to check extruder calibration and temperature settings
Please notify staff so they can replace the filament spool.
