Next Gen - a day with the Brisbane Portrait Prize

Designed for high school students with an interest in visual arts, this immersive experience provides a behind-the-scenes look at the Brisbane Portrait Prize and the many pathways into a career in the arts. 

Through artist conversations, exhibition experiences and industry insights, students will explore what it takes to build a creative career in today's cultural landscape.

Auditorium sessions

Attendees will come together in the auditorium to hear from one of Australia’s leading contemporary artists as they discuss their experiences, decisions and defining moments that have shaped their career. 

This will be followed by an industry led panel which will explore pathways available across the arts – giving students insight into:

• Creative career pathways
• Skills and experiences that matter beyond the classroom
• Building portfolios, networks and professional opportunities

Artist spotlights and exhibition experience

Either before or after the auditorium session, students will have the opportunity to meet a couple of Brisbane Portrait Prize finalist artists in small groups and explore the 2026 Finalists Exhibition. Two staggered sessions will ensure every student can engage closely with the artists and artworks.
