Meet Charlie: your AI guide to World War I (Years 7–10)

Unlock the stories and insights of World War I, one of the most pivotal eras in Australian history, with the help of ‘Charlie’, State Library’s AI-driven Virtual Veterans chatbot. 
 
This workshop provides a positive experience for students using AI in a range of fun, hands-on activities. They will explore the experiences of Australians who served and of citizens on the home front during this tumultuous era. 

Virtual Veterans is an innovative venture bringing World War I history to life, using AI techniques to guide students through the rich collections and resources of State Library, Trove, and the Australian War Memorial. Student can access personal letters, diaries, newspaper articles from 1914 to 1918, and other first-hand accounts from the Great War. 

Workshop notes: 

  • This session is delivered via Microsoft Teams. 
  • This workshop aligns with the Australian Curriculum v9.0, History 7–10, Year 9 content descriptions (AC9HH9S02), (AC9HH9S03), (AC9HH9S04), (AC9HH9S06) and (ACHH9S08). 
  • This session is a multi-school event, open to all schools for registration. 
  • Students will need access to a laptop/computer to participate in this workshop.  
  • A student worksheet will be sent to teachers to facilitate continued engagement with ‘Charlie’ after the workshop. 
  • Bookings for these workshops close 30 minutes before the event.
