History and Craft: Create a paper spitfire

Calling all spitfire enthusiasts! Pop into Anzac Square Memorial Galleries this school holidays to create your own spitfire Mk VIII paper model.

Suitable for all ages, this free family-friendly craft activity is available between 10 am and 4 pm daily from 13 December to 25 January (closed Saturdays and public holidays). Bookings are not required, simply visit the craft table in our Post World War II Gallery.

Few aircraft are as iconic as the Supermarine Spitfire, used by the Royal Air Force and other allied countries before, during and after World War II. A total of 20,351 Spitfires were built between 1938 and 1946, with 24 different marks (versions). The Mk VIII was the last Spitfire variant acquired by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). It was flown by several RAAF squadrons, including No. 457, from July 1944 to October 1945 in the Pacific conflict. They were famously known as the 'Grey Nurse Squadron', for painting the face of a shark, with menacing eyes and a gaping jaw lined with huge sharp teeth on the nose of their aircraft.

Join us in the Post World II gallery to create and customise your own 'Grey Nurse' Mk VIII spitfire paper model. Facilitated by our knowledgeable team, this activity is a fun and crafty way to learn more about the history of this beloved aircraft.
