Unleashing creativity: easy DIY imaginative play at home

7 December 2023 | State Library of Queensland

One of the most effective ways to stimulate your little one's mind is through imaginative play and you can create magical worlds right at home using safe, everyday items. Here are some simple pretend play ideas you can share together.

Cardboard box adventures:

The humble cardboard box can transform into anything your child's imagination desires. A spaceship, a castle, a race car – the possibilities are endless! Provide markers, paints and stickers, and let your little one decorate their box. Not only are they building creativity, they are problem solving and decision making through the process.

Sock puppets:

Old socks can find a new life as puppets in this DIY activity. Gather mismatched socks, buttons (with supervision), yarn and fabric scraps to create your own puppet pet. Encourage your child to put on a puppet show to retell their favourite story or make up their own.

Nature-inspired play:

Your garden is full of interesting things to collect - leaves, flowers and pebbles can become a small home, farm or fairy garden. Adding a few familiar toys can build connection to the natural world too.

Pretend play props:

Gather safe household items to create pretend play props. An old telephone can become a magical communication device, while a blanket transforms into a superhero cape or cubby. Encourage your child to see possibility in the simple things you find at home.

Imaginative play is a superpower in itself, enabling children to explore, create, problem-solve and socialise in a world where they make up the rules and control what happens next. Turn ordinary into extraordinary at home and enjoy the creative process with your child.
