Through play, children thrive
24 July 2025 | State Library of Queensland
Children learn through play from their first weeks of life. Play builds and protects little brains and bodies, and when children have the time and space to play, they thrive.
The great thing about play is it can happen anywhere, any time. Through First 5 Forever Queensland public libraries are championing the early years with opportunities for play and discovery, indoors and out.
Whitsunday Regional Council delivers 'Splash and rhyme poolside' at council and commercial pool facilities. Children and families sing, share stories and play together before having a swimming lesson.
Townsville CityLibraries offer 'Messy play in the park' where children and families can explore fun, sensory, creative messy play together. Their 'Curious kids' program offers a suite of online learning challenges that introduce STEM concepts through play-based learning.
Mackay Regional Council Libraries offer a special 'Dads n bubs baby bounce' session giving Dads the opportunity to bond with their little one through play and connect with other caregivers.
Cairns Libraries has collaborated with Queensland Ballet to offer 'Dancing Storytime' and Bulkaway Muruku for a baby rhyme time bringing stories to life through yarn and song.
First 5 Forever is all about creating opportunities for every child in every community to explore, learn and grow through free, playful activities at their library.
Wherever you are, make the most everyday moments to play, engage curiosity, build wonder and build little brains.
