Singing to support language development

10 August 2020 | State Library of Queensland

Singing with your 0-5 year old is a fun way to share special time with your child while you boost their vocabularies and help them to get to know the rhythms of language.

It's never too early to start and every little bit counts! Learn more in this video.

Singing together with your child helps them to learn new words and understand language patterns

Babies and children love music, and these are some easy ways to incorporate it into your day:

  • Sing at key transition times, such as naptime, bathtime and bedtime
  • Make up songs about things you do during the day
  • Sing along to music in the car and encourage them to sing along with you

Singing slows language down and provides rhyme and repetition, allowing children to start developing their awareness of relationships between letters and sounds.

And remember - your child loves the sound of your voice, even if you are worried you can't sing!

Watch Rhyme Time sessions online

Our Rhyme Time sessions feature nursery rhymes and songs that link actions to words and include rhyme and repetition - all of which support your child's language development.

You can also join other families for free Baby Play, Rhyme Time and Story Time sessions at your local library or Indigenous Knowledge Centre.
