Simple play ideas that are great for learning

29 October 2019 | State Library of Queensland

Play gives young children a way to practice what they are learning and is important for their development. But you don’t need expensive toys or structured activities to help this along – your child’s best play companion is you.

Some simple ideas to try:

  • Make cubbies with sheets, blankets , pillows and pegs. Fill them up with books and snuggle up together.
  • Act out your favourite book with characters made from toilet rolls, paddle pop sticks, or old socks.
  • Make an obstacle course out of pillows and cushions, chairs and a broom handle or other bits and pieces from around the house and yard.
  • Thread uncooked spaghetti, toothpicks, ribbons or pipe cleaners into an upturned colander.
