Simple activities to help language development

17 October 2023 | State Library of Queensland

It’s never too early to help your little one develop language skills.

Here are some simple ways you can boost brain development and your child's vocabulary at home:

  • Read aloud: reading to your child is one of the best ways to introduce them to new words and concepts. Choose colourful picture books with simple text and engaging illustrations.
  • Word play with objects: pick up everyday objects and say their names aloud. For instance, during mealtime, point to the spoon, fork, and plate, and say their names clearly.
  • Labelling objects: place sticky notes with the names of objects around the house. For example, label the chair, table, door, and window. This encourages word-object association.
  • Nursery rhymes and songs: singing nursery rhymes and songs not only introduces new words but also helps with rhythm and memory. Incorporate actions to make it more interactive.
  • Building blocks and words: use building blocks with letters to form simple words. As you build words, say them aloud. This can be a fun introduction to letter recognition and phonics.
  • Sorting games: play sorting games with objects of different categories, like toys, fruits, and clothes. Use the opportunity to introduce new words and concepts.
  • Mirror talk: stand in front of a mirror with your child. Point to different parts of your face and body as you name them, like eyes, nose, mouth, etc.

Remember, the key is to make these activities enjoyable and interactive. Engaging your child's senses and incorporating play will make learning words a joyful experience.
