Outdoor play activity ideas

12 September 2023 | State Library of Queensland

Play uses all five senses which is great for growing brains. Check out these play ideas that can be fun for both you and your little one!

  • Nature scavenger hunt: create a list of items like leaves, flowers, rocks and bugs to find. It's a fantastic way to explore and learn about the wonders of nature.
  • Messy art fun: set up an outdoor art station with washable paints, chalk and large paper. Let their creativity run wild as they paint and draw in the fresh air.
  • Mini gardening: involve your child in gardening activities like planting seeds, watering plants and watching their little garden grow. It's a fantastic opportunity to teach them about responsibility and the beauty of nurturing life.
  • Outdoor picnics: pack some snacks and a blanket, and head to a nearby park for a picnic. The change of scenery will make lunchtime extra special.
  • Obstacle course: set up a simple obstacle course in your backyard or at the park. Let them crawl, jump and hop their way through fun challenges.
  • Nature art: encourage them to make art using natural materials like leaves, sticks and pebbles. It's a fantastic way to foster appreciation for the environment.
  • Sensory play: fill containers with sand, water or mud, and let them explore through sensory play. Exploration is great for growing brains.

Play every day - it's how children learn!
