National Reconciliation Week, sharing stories with our little ones

26 May 2026 | State Library of Queensland

National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to come together, reflect on our shared history and take meaningful steps toward a more united and respectful future.

Held from 27 May to 3 June, the week recognises two important milestones in Australia’s reconciliation journey: the 1967 referendum and the 1992 Mabo decision. These moments remind us of the importance of truth-telling, respect and working together toward reconciliation.

This year’s theme, All In, is a call for all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every single day. It reminds us that reconciliation is not something that happens on its own. Real change takes all of us listening, learning and taking action together.

As a parent or caregiver, you might wonder how to talk with young children about reconciliation. Maybe they’ve asked questions you’re unsure how to answer, or perhaps you’re looking for gentle ways to introduce conversations about culture, community, and belonging in a way that encourages empathy and understanding.

One powerful place to begin is through sharing stories.

Reading together creates opportunities for thoughtful, age-appropriate conversations while helping children build curiosity, compassion and connection with the world around them.

A wonderful book to share this Reconciliation Week is One Race by Kamilaroi and Euahlayi author and artist Gregg Dreise. This poetic book encourages young readers to embrace what connects us while respecting our differences.

You can also explore National Reconciliation Week through your local library or Indigenous Knowledge Centre. Drop in to see what programming and resources they have on offer throughout the week.
