6 October 2023 | State Library of Queensland

Are you ready to whip up some play time magic at home? This non-toxic play dough recipe will have your little one squishing, rolling, cutting, stretching and creating for hours! Play dough is great for little hands and fine motor development.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 2 tablespoons cream of tartar
  • 1 1/2 cups hot water
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • Food colouring (optional)
  • Essential oils (optional, for a delightful scent)

Instructions:

  1. Mixing the dry ingredients:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and cream of tartar. Mix them together until they're well incorporated.
  2. Adding wet ingredients:
In a separate bowl, mix the hot water, vegetable oil, and a few drops of food colouring (if using). Feel free to experiment with different colours to create vibrant play dough!
  3. Combining the mixtures:
Gradually pour the wet mixture into the bowl with the dry ingredients. Stir everything together until it forms a dough.
  4. Kneading the dough:
Once the dough is cool enough to handle, turn it out onto a clean surface. Knead the dough until it's smooth, soft, and pliable.

Adding Scent (Optional): if you're using essential oils, add a few drops to the dough and knead it in. This will give your play dough a delightful scent that enhances the sensory experience.

You can also add glitter, small beads, or textured materials to the play dough to create an even more engaging sensory experience.

Store the play dough in an airtight container or zip lock bag to keep it fresh for future play sessions.

Safety Note: this play dough is non-toxic but be cautious if your child has any allergies. Always supervise play.
