All the colours of the rainbow!

27 June 2024 | State Library of Queensland

This month is International Pride Month

International Pride Month is celebrated each June to honour the Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan in 1969 and celebrate the LGBTQ community all over the world.

For many families this is also a time to celebrate their own rainbow!

To celebrate all the colours of the rainbow with your little ones, why not visit your local library and borrow one of the many fantastic books that celebrate family and pride?

Here are a few you and your little ones might enjoy reading together:

  • Love Makes a Family written and illustrated by Sophie Beer (2018): Whether you have two mums, two dads, one parent, or one of each, there's one thing that makes a family a family... and that is love.

  • The Spectacular Suit written by Kat Patrick and illustrated by Hayley Wells (2021): It’s Frankie's birthday, but all her party dresses feel wrong. Her family tries to help, but it is no good. What Frankie longs for is a suit. A spectacular suit ... A gorgeous story about the euphoria experiences when your outside matches your inside.

  • My Shadow is Pink written and illustrated by Scott Stuart: A beautifully written rhyming story about a little boy who likes princesses, fairies, and things “not for boys”. With the help of his dad, the little boy learns not to hide who he really is in a shadow but to love himself unconditionally.

Warm and caring relationships and interactions help children feel nurtured and safe, and build their confidence, resilience and relationships with others. Supporting and affirming a child’s emerging identity and celebrating their family is important for the health and wellbeing of all children.
