Library membership provides you with access to the State Library of Queensland's collections and services.

How to join

Register online

Complete the registration form.

A library card will be mailed to your home address within 5 working days. If you are a member of a Queensland Public Library (QPL) you can also register for a QPL account.

Register in person

Register in person at the Welcome Desk, level 1 or the Information Desk, level 3. Proof of ID and your permanent home address is required.

  • A parent/guardian declaration is required for applicants under 18 years.

You must be a Queensland resident.

If you live outside Queensland and are planning to visit the State Library, you can register for a non-Queensland resident library card onsite.

Benefits of membership

It's free. With your library card (formerly e-services card) you can:

  • Access (via One Search) books, eresources, journals, databases, newspapers, manuscripts, videos, images, sound recordings and more
    • Non-Queensland residents receive access to eresources onsite at SLQ only. See Terms and conditions for more information
  • Personalise your searches
    • save your catalogue searches
    • receive alerts when new items arrive on your favourite topics

  • Request items from stored collections so they are waiting for you when you visit
  • Check the status of your requests
  • Add comments and tags to items in our collection
  • Book a computer on levels 2 and 3 for up to three hours each day
  • Book a meeting room on levels 2, 3 and 4 for up to three hours each day
  • Add credit on your card to use printers/copiers
  • Borrow music scores (conditions apply)
    • Apart from music scores, SLQ does not lend its collections directly to individuals. Copies or loans of our collection items may be available through the interlibrary loan service provided by your local public library.

How to renew or update your card

Your library card is active for two years from the date of issue or renewal.

Please phone 07 3840 7850 or complete our online form if:

  • You have lost your card
  • Your contact details have changed
  • Your card has become inactive

Register for a QPL account

If you are a member of a Queensland Public Library (QPL) you can use your library barcode number to register for a QPL account.

Your QPL account allows you to:

  • Start searching the e-resource collections immediately
  • Search One Search for books and e-resources, journals, databases, newspapers, manuscripts, videos, images, sound recordings and more
  • Personalise your searches
    • Save catalogue searches
    • Receive alerts when new items arrive on your favourite topics
  • Add comments and tags to items in our collection.

Register for a Guest account

Anyone can register for a Guest account. A One Search Guest account allows you to personalise your catalogue searches.

Your Guest account allows you to:

  • Save catalogue searches
  • Receive alerts when new items arrive on your favourite topics
  • Add comments and tags to items in our collection.

Guest accounts cannot access eresources offsite. If you are a Queensland resident you can upgrade to an SLQ library card or QPL account for these services and more.

Register for a Regional Libraries Queensland (RLQ) tourist card

If you are a resident or travelling within regional and outback Queensland you can register for a RLQ tourist card.

Your RLQ tourist card allows you to:

  • Borrow books and items from all RLQ libraries
  • Renew library items
  • View current loans and loans history
  • View or change your personal details
  • Add your own reviews

RLQ tourist cards cannot access eresources. If you are a Queensland resident you can upgrade to an SLQ library card or QPL account to access eresources.
