The Unbroken Spirit of the Kalkadoons (Year 4-6)

We invite students in Years 4 to 6 to join us for a special workshop exploring the story of Colleen Sam, a Kalkadunga (Kalkadoon) artist and storyteller, and the remarkable strength of the Kalkadoon people. Linked to State Library of Queensland’s The unbroken spirit of the Kalkadoons exhibition, 8 March to 24 August 2025, this workshop offers students a unique opportunity to deepen their understanding of Queensland's history and its First Nations peoples.

Students will uncover the challenges faced by Colleen’s family and the profound impact of colonisation on the Kalkadoon people. Through stunning artwork, real-life stories, and powerful imagery, they will learn about the Kalkadoons' rich history, vibrant culture, and extraordinary resilience and discover how the Kalkadoon people preserved their traditions through adversity and maintained their strong connection to Country.

Key themes include the importance of water in Kalkadoon culture, connection to their land and the significance of caring for the environment.

Key Highlights of the workshop

  • Sounds of Country: Explore how the sounds of water, like raindrops and thunder, connect the Kalkadoon people to their land.
  • Connection to Family: Learn about the elders who passed down their knowledge and stories, shaping the strength and identity of the Kalkadoon people.
  • Connection to Country: Discover how Colleen’s art illustrates the deep relationships between people, animals, and the land, and how the Kalkadoon people care for each other and their environment.
  • Inspiration from Ancestors: Reflect on your own family stories, the wisdom shared by your ancestors, and ways we can all contribute to caring for the world around us.

Important information for teachers:

This workshop supports the sharing of First Nations stories and perspectives, helping students understand and respect First Nations cultures. Some content may be sensitive or confronting for younger students. We encourage teachers to prepare students beforehand.

Please note: The workshop may include images or names of individuals who have passed away, which could be culturally significant for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
