Teaching World War I using Queensland stories

In this 30-minute workshop teachers will discover rich stories from State Library’s collections that create meaningful connections between students, Queensland and the events of the Great War.

Participants will explore primary sources such as diaries, letters, photographs, military equipment, propaganda and official records that highlight the experiences of those who served in the war and those on the home front.

The workshop will also introduce ‘Charlie’, an AI-powered virtual veteran who brings history to life. ‘Charlie’ helps students uncover the true stories contained in thousands of letters and diaries written by soldiers and nurses who served in World War I and over 50,000 Queensland newspaper articles published from 1914 to 1918, offering a unique perspective on World War I.

Workshop takeaways:

  • Practical strategies and curriculum-aligned resources to create engaging history lessons centred on Queensland’s experience of the Great War.
  • Create a free State Library membership to maximise your experience and gain full access to State Library’s resources.
  • This free, 30-minute workshop will be live-streamed via Microsoft Teams.
  • A Microsoft Teams link will be sent to you upon completion of your booking.
