Join us for a fun evening especially for families! On Friday 20 December you are invited to explore our exhibition spaces, play together, share stories, make and create, and experience State Library after dark.

Highlights include:

  • Enjoy musical performances from performer Lucas Proudfoot.
  • Join a storytelling session with Nana Magic
  • Experiment with Ozobots in the tech play pit
  • Create your own laser-cut gift tags
  • Make your own custom wrapping paper

Tickets are only $20 per family of all make-ups and ages.


Special Guest, Murri Claus

Enjoy a hearty welcome to Summer Night with Murri Claus. Catch his jolly performances with photo opportunities every half hour throughout the evening.

Musical storytelling with Lucas Proudfoot 

6pm & 7.15pm | The Red Box, level 2
Sing and dance with dynamic musical performer Lucas Proudfoot as he presents a special musical storytelling experience.

Rainbow Serpent storytelling with Nana Magic

Experience Nana Magic’s vibrant and creative storytelling of the traditional Aboriginal Dreamtime story, the Rainbow Serpent.


Escape room
5.45pm, 6.30pm & 7.15pm Loris Williams Room,  kuril dhagun, level 1
Solve puzzles and crack clues to find an escape as the clock ticks down in this fun activity that will inspire problem solving, team work and imagination. This is an all ages event, with under 8’s needing caregiver supervision. Places are limited. Sign up on the night.

Tech play pit

What do robots get up to after dark when everyone else has gone to bed? Some people think they just sit recharging their batteries, but nothing could be further from the truth. Stop by the Tech play pit to see exactly what Sphero, Ozobot, NAO and their robot friends get up to at night.

Comic book Scrabble

Drop in and help create State Library’s summer comic book story using sticky notes, coloured markers and a crossword frame of mind.

Creative wishes and pop-up treasures
5.30–8pm | Poinciana Lounge, level 2
Make your own pop-up card creations using our specially curated collection of pop-up treasures to inspire you. Write and share your wishes for family and friends at State Library’s dedicated wishing station.

Book making
5.30–8pm | Reading Nook, kuril dhagun, level 1
Settle in to our cosy reading nook and create your very own book to take home or give as a gift to someone special.

Gift tag making
5.30–8pm | Infozone, level 1
Use a laser cutter to produce a personalised gift tag and bring your gifts to life.

Vinyl sticker making
5.30–8pm | Infozone, level 1
Learn to use a vinyl cutter to create your own stickers to take home. All ages welcome, though under 8s will need a caregiver’s assistance.

Eye spy tour of Jarjum Stories
5.30–8pm | Infozone, level 1
Eye spy your way through State Library’s exhibition, Jarjum Stories. On this self-guided tour you will discover fascinating stories, creatures and critters. Even a very cheeky bird! How many can you spy? Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Paper making

Make your own summer festival-inspired gift paper or a special custom print.

Parachute play
5.45pm & 6.30pm | The Parlour, level 1
Dive in to this 20-minute session of playful group parachute fun for younger children.

Imagination playscape
5.30–8pm | The Parlour, level 1
Build your own imaginary world using an assortment of shapes and materials to design, create and build together. The Imagination playscape challenges children and families with hands-on, minds-on play!

Family playtime

Explore our dedicated children’s space and let the creative resources and stories inspire you to play, sing, talk and read together.

Scavenger hunt State Library after dark

There are some very sneaky secrets hidden around State Library this Summer Festival. Collect the clues and get to know your library in this self-guided scavenger hunt. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Guided tours

Discover some of the State Library spaces you might never have visited before on a guided tour. Meet at the Information Desk inside the Infozone, level 1.

Pop-up Library Shop
5.30–8pm | Infozone, level 1
Explore a curated selection of books and giftware, including items from local producers, and pick up some last-minute gifts. You can even get your Lucas Proudfoot book signed!

Summer Festival

Join us for a summer of fun at our annual Summer Festival, 14 Dec - 25 Jan! With activities for children of all ages, there will be something new and exciting for your family to explore.

Bring children under 5 and explore our Jarjum Stories exhibition or dance and sing at a free First 5 Forever session.

Children 8-14 can engineer a robot racer using Lego, challenge themselves with a treasure hunt and join a game of comic book scrabble.

Teens can spark their imagination and meet new people with dedicated Dungeons and Dragons workshops, fabric printing, exploring new worlds in a VR (virtual reality) environment. Plus, teens can design their own spaces and objects, using creative and technology equipment at The Edge, including sewing machines and the laser cutter.
