State Library of Queensland has over 1,700 books in its Artists’ Books Collection and it is constantly growing. This showcase highlights some of the new acquisitions of 2019.
Artists’ books come in all shapes and sizes. They are often made of paper, like a normal book, but artists are known to use a wide range of other materials.
For example, Maleny artist Barry Smith salvaged silver-plate serving trays to make his installation, Precious library of peace. The leaves are rivetted together and the centre leaf of each is stamped with a word or quote related to ‘peace’. These metal books range in size from 13cm high to a tiny 2cm.
