What is Lynda.com?
Lynda.com is an elearning subscription service that includes over 5,500 courses and over 136,000 video tutorials in topics like Windows 10, Office 365, Google Docs, photography, web development, marketing, IT, business management, and job seeking. Experts create and deliver all courses as well as provide supplemental materials like exercise files and relevant work samples.
How do I use Lynda.com?
Step-by-step instructions on how to access the database onsite at the library, offsite on your desktop, or via the app, are available.
Lynda.com provides instructional videos on using the database. You may need to be logged in to Lynda.com with your user profile to be able to view the videos.
Do I have to pay to access Lynda.com?
No. State Library subscribes to Lynda.com, and free access is available to all Queenslanders using your State Library membership or public library membership. The state-wide subscription allows all Queensland residents unlimited access to the online courses from any compatible desktop or portable device, whether on a library computer, at your home or business, or on your mobile device.
Can I access Lynda.com if I am not at State Library of Queensland?
Yes. If you have State Library membership or public library membership, you can access Lynda.com from anywhere – home, office, etc. You do not have to be in State Library.
I am not an State Library member. How can I access Lynda.com?
If you are a Queensland resident, apply for State Library membership online to enjoy immediate access to State Library’s collections and services, including Lynda.com. If you are not a Queensland resident, you will need to investigate the options provided in your state, or subscribe to Lynda.com as an individual. Temporary visitors to Queensland can access Lynda.com onsite at State Library.
I don’t have an State Library membership but I am a member of a Queensland public library. Can I access Lynda.com with my public library membership?
Current members of a Queensland public library, Rural Libraries Queensland (RLQ), or Indigenous Knowledge Centre (IKC) can access Lynda.com using their library membership. For more information, please visit the help page for public libraries.
I already have a paid subscription to Lynda.com. Can I switch to State Library’s free service?
If you are a Queensland resident and already have a paid account, you can cancel your monthly subscription and access your account via State Library's subscription, without losing access to your history. If you previously had a paid subscription that has lapsed, logging on via the State Library should reactivate your account, and provide access to your course history, certificates of completion, notes, and bookmarks.
Do I still have access to Lynda.com if I am no longer a Queensland resident/State Library member?
If your State Library membership expires, or you no longer reside in Queensland you will not be able to access Lynda.com via State Library’s subscription.
What happens to my content if State Library stops subscribing?
If State Library ever decided not to continue subscribing to Lynda.com, you would no longer be able to access the database for free. Your profile would remain current at Lynda.com, but you would need to take up a paid, individual subscription to access the content.
Can I use Lynda.com for teaching purposes?

Can I access the database directly from the Lynda.com URL?
State Library of Queensland uses a web proxy server (EZproxy) to provide users from outside the library's computer network access to restricted-access websites. As such, you can only access Lynda.com by using State Library’s proxied web address: https://wwwlyndacom.ezproxy.slq.qld.gov.au/Login. You may wish to bookmark this url for easy access.
Can I access Lynda.com via the Lynda.com app?
Yes. Create your profile on your desktop first. Download the app from your preferred app store, and log in with the user name and password. Using the app allows you to download content for viewing offline.
Does Lynda.com provide a site optimised for mobile use?
Yes. Mobile users who don’t want to download the app can use the mobile site m.lynda.com
Can I download content?
Yes. Lynda.com provides download options on both the desktop and the app, allowing you to download content for viewing offline. On your desktop, select the “View offline” button located underneath the video to start the download (you will need to download the desktop app to download content). On the app, simply click the download icon to download one or all of your videos in your current course.
What are the system requirements for Lynda.com?
To watch videos on Lynda.com you must be connected to the Internet. A 3G, 4G or Wi-Fi connection is recommended for optimal mobile viewing. Annual premium members (including State Library members) can download courses on the app to watch offline where Internet connection is not available.

I entered my State Library membership details in the Lynda.com login page, and it tells me that my username and/or password is incorrect. What does that mean?
When accessing Lynda.com offsite (from home, office, etc) the login process is two step – you need both your State Library membership details, and a Lynda.com profile.
Step One – authenticate that you are an State Library member by entering your State Library membership details on the authentication page.
Step Two – enter your Lynda.com profile username and password on the Lynda.com site.
If you don’t already have a Lynda.com profile, then you will need to create one. Please see full step-by-step instructions on accessing Lynda.com.
I received a “ File missing: docs\suspend.htm” error message while viewing content. What does that mean?
The “File missing: docs\suspend.htm” error message is displayed when a State Library user downloads excessive amounts of material in a short space of time from our electronic databases. There are restrictions on State Library’s proxy server to prevent excessive downloading by robots or other spoof mechanisms. When you see this message, it means you have exceeded the allowable download limit (1Gb in a 15 minute period). When this happens you will be unable to access any of State Library’s proxied databases for a period of two hours. If, after two hours, you are not able to log back in to Lynda.com, please Ask Us for assistance.
My exercises are not working
We have occasional reports of clients not being able to access the exercise files. Please try accessing the content on different web browsers to see if that makes a difference. If not, please Ask Us for assistance.
My videos are not playing
We have occasional reports of clients not being able to play video content. Please try accessing the content on different web browsers to see if that makes a difference. If not, please Ask Us for assistance. Lynda.com has a Video Playback troubleshooting page which may also have some useful advice.
I just tried to access Lynda.com and it says my profile is expired.
If you created a lynda.com profile prior to June 2015, and have not used it for a very long time, your account may have expired. If this is the case, you will need to create a new profile (you won’t be able to use the same username). As soon as you have created a new profile, you will be able to access lynda.com straight away. Unfortunately any saved history, courses, etc. will not be transferred to the new profile.
I am trying to access Lynda.com on my mobile/tablet, and it tells me there are ‘certificate safety issues’, or that my connection is not private. What does this mean?
You may need to update the root certificate associated with your browser on your device.
You can manually install the Root certificate from https://www.thawte.com/roots/. Select “Thawte Primary Root CA – G2” ( https://www.thawte.com/roots/thawte_Primary_Root_CA-G2_ECC.pem).
Root certificates are generally preinstalled with the browser, and most times if they are updated should include this root certificate.
