Young Writers Awards 2021 winners

Ellen Vickerman won for 'Sun Queens'. Judges called her story "confidently and evocatively written, with a vivid, palpable sense of place and impressive use of language". Ellen received $2,000 and was published in Griffith Review.

Zarin Nuzhat was the first runner-up in 2021. Zarin works in Brisbane as a junior doctor. Judges said her story, 'Friday', is a "compelling and convincing story that is effectively structured and emotionally moving". A past runner-up of the Young Writers Award, Zarin received $500.

Ellie Kaddatz was named second runner-up in 2021. Her story, 'Precious Cargo', was described by the judges as "expressive ... [tackling] a topical subject with emotional sensitivity and is a convincing and accomplished read". Ellie is a QUT creative writing student. 

Eden Annesley wrote the striking and intriguing 'Halcyon'. The judges loved the story's tone, calling it "impressively conjured and sustained". Like Zarin and Ellie, Eden was awarded $500 and Queensland Writers Centre membership for coming runner-up.
