Woorabinda Women's Exhibition

This week Leecee, Nadine and I traveled up to Central Queensland to meet with the lovely ladies at the Women’s Centre in the Woorabinda Aboriginal Community. The centre is run by Red Cross and provides short-term accommodation for women in need, as well as programs to support local woman to build on their skills. They also participate in a range of art and craft activities and now have a great collection of beautiful hand-crafted items, decorated home wares, clothing and paintings on canvas.

Red Cross senior case worker Janelle Evans and the Gumbi Gunyah Woman’s and Children’s Wellbeing Centre submitted an expression of interest to display their creations in the kuril dhagun space. I am happy to announce that they have been successful and we are now finalising the upcoming exhibition details.

While we were there we spoke about what items they wanted to include and what information to share. There was a whole lot of business to discuss in a very short amount of time. They chose a preferred design layout with a colour palette and we spoke about how we will market the exhibition. We had a brief yarn about the process of loaning items, appropriate freight, checking items through conservation, exhibition installation and the opening event.

The group was worried about not having enough items to fill the space but when we went to their storeroom it was packed with artwork! We spent some time itemizing the works and photographing them so we can complete our loan agreements and start on the curation.

The women were so welcoming and were really excited about the big exhibition in Brisbane. Just quietly the kuril dhagun team are also very excited.
