This week in 1915, the Queensland Times (Ipswich) newspaper reported that the Premier Mr. Digby Denham had received a letter from the managing editor of the London Daily Chronicle:

Dear Sir, I beg to tender my most sincere thanks for your great courtesy in permitting me to convey your New Year message to the British public through the medium of the 'Daily Chronicle’, and it gives me pleasure to send you a copy of this journal in which the message was published.   The sentiments of loyal devotion expressed by you and other leaders of the Dominions beyond the seas attracted much attention, and greatly touched the people at home, by whom this fresh proof of the indissoluble bond that united the Empire was warmly welcomed.—I am, &c., R. Donald, Managing Editor.

Mr. Denham's reply was as follows:

Queensland is heart and soul with the Mother Country in the great  battle she is fighting for liberty and civilisation against the most formidable enemy that has ever assailed them, and is confident that, having drawn the sword in the most righteous of causes, she will not sheath it until by her exertions and her example all free peoples and democratic  institutions are for ever safe from  the deadly peril that now menaces them.
