Leaving behind six-minute billables: lawyers turned entrepreneurs

Working as a litigation lawyer was incredibly rewarding for Nadia Tucker.

She relished the opportunity to help clients win legal battles, and loved being part of a team.

But while on maternity leave, she saw a gap in the market for well-fitting active wear, prompting her to start a side business manufacturing a small range manufacturing bold-print leggings and tops and selling them online with a friend. Active Truth launched in May 2016.

Tucker returned to work as a lawyer and kept working on her supportive, high-waisted workout leggings. She says she didn’t believe the market response from Australian women would be so overwhelming, with the business turning over just shy of $500,000 in the first year of trade.

While thrilled, Tucker, of Brisbane, admits the success of Active Truth gave her a hard decision.

“To be honest, I had no idea that the business would take off like it did," she says. "We were growing so quickly, and I needed to be present to help my business partner manage the growth curve. I loved my job, and was really proud of what I did as a lawyer, but I had to give it up to steer the ship with the business.” Read more
