Next steps
The Path to Treaty began in 2019. Since then, there have been several key bodies established to progress the Treaty journey. We are taking the time needed to get this right and we want community to help inform the next steps.
Where we are?
We have co-designed legislation with the Queensland Government―the Path to Treaty Bill 2023. The Bill will provide the necessary structures required to progress Truth and Treaty in Queensland, including establishment of:
- A First Nations Treaty Institute (Institute) to prepare First Nations communities for treaty negotiations and engage in local truth telling activities.
- A Truth Telling and Healing Inquiry (Inquiry) to lead a formal process into the impacts of colonisation through hearing and recording truth telling stories.
Where to next?
Our next steps will include:
- Setting up the Institute to support local truth telling and healing, and to create a treaty making framework
- Engaging with community on the development of the Terms of Reference to set up the Inquiry, to undertake a formal truth telling and healing process
- Yarning with community members so that all voices are heard and included.
