COVID-19 update: State Library is gradually reopening. Before you visit, please read what spaces are open.
As Brisbane City Council Architect in the 1950s, James Birrell is the designer of many of Brisbane’s iconic mid-century buildings.
From the Wickham Terrace carpark to The Centenary Pool at Spring Hill as well as many buildings located at The University of Queensland, Birrell’s work has a familiarity to Brisbane dwellers. State Library of Queensland now holds Birrell’s archives in the John Oxley Library.
The materials represent not only the projects, when Birrell was in private practice, but also his personal correspondence and records relating to his life and career. At this event you will hear about the Birrell Collection and be invited to closely examine the items.
Presented as a part of Brisbane Open House.
