Thomas William Sherlock (1892-1915) had previously trained with No.4 Battalion East Lancashire Territorial Force, before emigrating to Australia in 1911 age 19. He enlisted in the First AIF 19 August 1914 in Bundaberg where he had been working as a labourer. After training at Enoggera Barracks he was assigned to the 9th Infantry Battalion, E Company and embarked for the Middle East in October 1914.

Sherlock was reported missing while in the firing line at Gallipoli on 2 May 1915. It was not until the authorities received a telegram from the American Ambassador in July 1915 did they discover his fate.

Thomas Sherlock had been taken prisoner after being wounded, and he was nursed at Beylerbey Hospital, Haida Pasha. Later information reported that sadly he died of septis poisoning (gangrene) 14 June 1915 and had been buried Haidar Pasha Cemetery, Istanbul.
