Tellin' Country: Logan

Tellin' Country  workshops have kick started at Logan. The State Library has teamed up with Logan City Council to deliver a workshop program on Saturdays from 10am - 1pm for the next 6 or so weeks. This is an awesome opportunity for young ones (9 - 16) to be involved in an exciting project. Participants will learn skills, create digital work and have the chance to share their story with a broad audience. All materials are provided and we give you a feed too.

Tellin' Country is a digital art project that provides an opportunity for young Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islanders to explore cultural identity, history and connection to country and share their stories through digital technologies. We have iPads with lots of really cool apps we can use to tell stories. I always have art and craft materials on hand so we can make or illustrate our stories too.

Last week we were at the Logan Art Gallery and one of my friends joined us to show us to show us some graff writing techniques and knocked up a board for us to practice on. Logan is an urban environment and where expression can often be seen through various forms of street culture. Spray paint is often tainted by the thought of ugly tags but it can be a great medium to create bright and beautiful work given ample time and an appropriate canvas.

Unfortunately, I haven't got the numbers I have been hoping for so far. So I thought I would do a call out for anyone young people that are interested inparticipating and contributing. I would like a solid group of 10 that can commit to the Saturday sessions and will be keen to produce some work about their community. Selected digital videos  will be featured in an exhibition at the State Library towards the end of the year.

Logan is my community; growing up I lived in Slacks Creek, Kingston, Woodridge and still live on the Southside now. I would love to see some amazing stories produced to represent positive stories from young people in Logan, particularly to counteract the negative stories appearing on our tv screens recently.
