Series: Our favourite State Library eresources.
People often ask us what our most loved eresources are. Admittedly we all have a favourite, or two, or three. It’s hard to pick as there are so many wonderful State Library eresources available. In this series our Librarians and Library Technicians share with you their most favourite eresources and how they’ve been used to solve research queries.
Next in the series we look at The Sydney Morning Herald Archives, a big favourite of Librarian Jo Ling.

So why is The Sydney Morning Herald Archives so fabulous?
As well as being useful for locating New South Wales articles, it is amazing how many Queensland stories also get covered. It helps fill in the gap between Trove (1954) and State Library’s Australia and New Zealand Newsstream database (2001 for the Courier Mail). Also, The Sydney Morning Herald Archives includes The Herald Sun and coverage spans from 1955 – 1995.
Best of all, you can access The Sydney Morning Herald Archives, online from home with your free State Library membership.
People are always looking for media coverage relating to events, accidents, crimes and court cases. However, if they occur between 1954 and 2001, you usually need to access the microform versions of the newspapers onsite. If you are unsure of the dates, this can mean many hours of scrolling through microfilm reels.
However, if The Sydney Morning Herald Archives has an article that covers your event, with the date in your hand, you will save many hours at the micrographic readers. You can then search The Courier Mail, or any other Queensland newspaper that might cover the story.
Here’s a good example of a recent enquiry I helped someone with. The person remembered as a child a wild tornado-type storm that savaged the western suburbs in the early 1970’s, narrowly missing her house. She wanted to get some newspaper articles to share at an upcoming family reunion. A search of The Sydney Morning Herald Archives brought up an article published on 5 November 1973, reporting the storm and its damage. Armed with this date she was able to locate many more articles about this storm event in our microfilm copy of the Courier Mail to take to her reunion.
