Oxford Estate, Paddington, 1899 (Map of the Week)

State Library of Queensland has an extensive collection of historical maps of Queensland, some of which have been digitised and can be viewed online.

This real estate map from 1899 advertises 90 allotments of land for sale at the Oxford Estate in the Brisbane suburb of Paddington. There is a discrepancy between the map and newspaper advertisements for the sale which report 80 allotments being available.

The allotments were situated along parts of Latrobe Terrace, Ellena Street, Annie Street, Herbert Street, Elizabeth Street (now Oxford Street), Alice Street (now Macartney Street) and Fernberg Road.

Prior to the sale extensive publicity was published in Brisbane newspapers.

Advertisement from The Telegraph, September 16, 1899

"This splendid estate is situated at Paddington, on Latrobe terrace, close to the Junction of Given Terrace and Enoggera Terrace, and has long frontage to Latrobe Terrace and Fernberg Road. The Majority of Allotments are situated on the top of Hill, and all are within a few yards of the Tram line." (The Telegraph, September 8, 1899)

A public auction was held at the site on the afternoon of September 23, 1899. The Telegraph newspaper reported the results of the sale –

"Cameron Bros. report a successful sale of the Oxford Estate, on the ground, on Saturday last, 27 allotments being disposed of for a total of £666 10s, the highest price realised being £49 10s for a single allotment. The attendance at the sale was good, and the bidding spirited."" (The Telegraph, September 25, 1899).
