What is NewsBank?

State Library has recently added NewsBank Access World News to our online collection of newspaper resources. NewsBank allows you to access a huge range of newspapers, both local and international, for free from your computer, tablet, or mobile. It’s a super handy way to keep up to date on what’s happening in the news.

NewsBank is freely available to access online from home using your State Library Membership.

What’s available through NewsBank?

NewsBank provides full colour, PDF image editions of major Australian newspapers, including The Australian and The Courier Mail and Sunday Mail for the last 12 months. The PDF image editions look exactly like the print edition, including all images, notices, and classifieds that are usually missing from text-only newspaper databases.

For ease of access The Australian, The Courier Mail, newspapers from Australia and newspapers from Queensland, are available via Quick Links on the Newsbank landing page.

If you are only looking for the text of an article NewsBank provides that too. It also provides the web versions of some newspapers, which can help you avoid that annoying situation when you click on the link for a particularly interesting looking article only to find yourself confronted with a paywall.

If you’re looking for a more international perspective NewsBank provides access to over 8,000 titles from 200 countries.

How do I use NewsBank?

There are a couple of different ways of finding what you’re after in NewsBank. You can browse individual issues if you’re just looking to catch up on the daily news from your favourite newspaper. If you’re looking for all the articles you can find about a particular event or subject, NewsBank allows you to search by keyword within a single publication or across all publications in the database. There is even a map feature so you can search by geographic location.

Creating an account will allow you to save articles and searches and create search alerts making it easy for you to keep track of stories that interest you or that you want to come back to later.

You can make copies of articles to print, save or email to yourself for future reference. If you’re a Google Drive user NewsBank also gives you the option to save articles directly to your Drive.
