Evie has been working with the LGBTIQ+ community for the past 10 years, after completing her Bachelor of Social Work and a Diploma in Film and Television. Having lived as a trans woman for the past 15 years, Evie underwent sex reassignment surgery (SRS) in Thailand. Evie is a founding member of the Lesbian Health Action Group and Many Genders One Voice, a trans and gender diverse action group promoting healthy communities.

I became a Lifestyle Program Ambassador because . . .
Being an ambassador gives me an opportunity to represent my community with issues that I am passionate about and to contribute to the visibility of the transgender community. Almost every day I experience people laughing and discriminating against me for being trans. I hope that being a Lifestyle Ambassador can play a small part in creating acceptance and understanding for people like me.

My favourite thing in the Lifestyle: a sunshine state of mind exhibition is . . .
It’s amazing how the exhibition makes you’re feel like your experiencing all the best parts of living in Queensland at once. There is literally a veranda built into the exhibition space.

My favourite part is the ‘Meaningful Mandala’ cut and paste craft activity. I could sit down and do with my two year old niece  to create a small piece of what we enjoyed about living in Queensland that we could add to the exhibition.

Five great books about my passion are . . .
• Transgender Warriors : Making History from Joan of Arc to Dennis Rodman
• Whipping Girl: A Transsexual Woman on Sexism and the Scapegoating of Femininity
• Ranma ½
• Hawk Occupation: Skateboarder
• Non Violent Communication: Create Your Life, Your Relationships and Your World in Harmony with Your Values

My favourite space at the State Library is . . .
The entrance to the Library. I love the architecture, the white tiles, the open aired space is cool and calm it’s great place to relax and meet friends on a hot sunny day.

Lifestyle: a sunshine state of mind explores how we live, work and play in an ever changing Queensland. Lifestyle aims to open up debate, challenge stereotypes, explore the unspoken and acknowledge that our lives revolve around a diversity of perspectives. To help achieve this, a group of nine Lifestyle Ambassadors were selected. They collectively form a diverse set of voices reflective of the many different lifestyles, cultures and values of the Queensland community. Each of these Ambassadors has a strong connection to Queensland and has inspiring stories across a broad range of lifestyle topics.
