May the fourth be with you!

By Tania Schafer, Librarian, Queensland Memory | 4 May 2021

Star Wars Day, May 4th is an informal celebration of the Star Wars movie franchise. It is a commemorative day that was chosen for the pun on the catchphrase "May the Force be with you" as "May the Fourth be with you".

2021 is the 44th anniversary of the first Star Wars movie “Episode IV A New Hope”, which opened in cinemas in 1977.

At State Library of Queensland we celebrated this day by getting out our favourite Star Wars related posters from the John Oxley Library collection. These posters were collected to document Queensland events such as the popular Supanova pop culture convention held annually in Brisbane and the Gold Coast.  Posters chosen include pictures of Chewbacca and advertisements for a Star Wars fan night known as the Empire Skanksback at the Buffalo Club, Fortitude Valley.
