Lilley Estate, Toowoomba, 1902 (Map of the Week)

This real estate map from 1902 advertises 79 allotments of land for sale at the Lilley Estate in Toowoomba. The allotments were situated along Bridge Street, Lindsay Street, Shipley Street, Lilley Street and Mary Street.

Prior to the sale extensive publicity was published in the Toowoomba and Brisbane newspapers.
"The Lilley Estate. By order of the Executors Late Sir Charley Lilley . This valuable residential area, overlooking the R.A. Society's Show Grounds, and having frontages to Bridge Street, Lindsay Street and Mary Street, is now subdivided into convenient residence sites...” (Darling Downs Gazette, August 8, 1902).

A public auction was held at the rooms of the auctioneers Scholefield and Godsall in Russell Street, on the morning of August 14, 1902. The Darling Downs Gazette newspaper reported the results of the sale, including the names of purchasers.

"Messrs Scholefield and Godsall report a most successful sale od the Lilley Estate, by auction, on Thursday. The following are the sales:- Allotments 1 and 2, Mr I. Abrahams; 3, Mr G.A. Godsall; 4, Mr J.A. Baxendell; 7 and 8, Mr W. Stewart; 9, 10, and 11, Mr D.G.V. Welsh; 12, Mr F.C. Kingston; 13 and 14, Mr J.G. Inwood; 15 and 16, Mr P. Ryan; 19 and 20, Mr G.A. Godsall; 21,22 and 23, Mr C.S. Eden; 24 and 24 , Mr J. Virgin; 31 and 32, Mr B.J. Beirne; 33 and 34, Mr Wm. Hodgen; 35 and 36 Mrs L. Baxter; 37 and 38, Mr W.T. Smith; 45 and 46, Mr I. Abrahams; 47, 48 and 49, Mr W. Barnes; 50 and 51, Mr I. Abrahams; 59, 60, 61 and 62, Mr P. Ryan; 63, Mr W.S. Lancashire; 64, Mr A.N. Stephens; 65 and 66, Mr V. Baxter; 67 and 68, Mrs L.Baxter; 75, Mr P.Ryan; 76,77,78 and 70, Mr W.H. Goodwin. There were 55 lots sold, totalling £1372 10s . Twenty-four lots remain unsold, including some splendid frontages to the R.A. Society's ground. The balance of the unsold portions is now for private sale at a very low figure." (Darling Downs Gazette, August 16, 1902)
