La Dolce Vita – Italians in Queensland at the Brisbane Abruzzo Club

By JOL Admin | 2 June 2011

On the evening of Thursday 5 May, Queensland State Archives and the Acting Consul of Italy for Queensland and Northern Territory hosted an event at the Brisbane Abruzzo Club in Carina, to open the Queensland State Archives display, La Dolce Vita: Italians in Queensland. The display recognises the contributions of Italians and their descendents to the economic and social development of Queensland.

2011 is also 150 years since the Italian unification. In the 19th century, the Italian Patriot, Giuseppe Garibaldi championed the uniting of the different states of the Italian peninsula into the single state of Italy.

Italians who migrated to Queensland brought this spirit of a united, homogenous community group to the new country. Event attendees at the Abruzzo Club were treated to an historical overview of Italian Emigration to Australia by Dr Angelo Lo Conte from the University of Milan.
