Join the Queue for Queensland: Tourism posters in Queensland State Archives' collection

Guest blogger: Niles Elvery - Manager, Public Access, Queensland State Archives

You might have already seen the blog post from State Library of Queensland sharing the details of digitised heritage tourism booklets from regions across Queensland. This has prompted us to think about records in our collection on tourism in Queensland. As well as many beautiful photographs of holiday hot spots which have been digitised and can be found using Image Queensland, we also have a lovely collection of Queensland tourism posters. For example, this tourism poster for Lindeman Island (pictured above) refers to ‘an island jewel in a coral sea’, a rather lovely description of this island destination. The poster was produced for the Queensland Government Tourist Bureau whose chief function was the promotion of tourism for Queensland. The Bureau undertook a number of activities including, but not limited to:

  • acting as a booking agency
  • producing films, brochures and publications to promote tourism, and;
  • sponsoring visits of overseas travel agents.

Aside from tourism posters, some of the records which Queensland State Archives holds for the Queensland Government Tourist Bureau include: • Series ID 20326: Queensland Tourism Brochures • Series ID 6292: Photograph Album of Tourist Accommodation • Series ID 7296: General Correspondence Batches, and; • Series ID 16629: Minutes of Australian and New Zealand Government Tourist Conference.
