Introduction to Indigenous Family History Research

By JOL Admin | 21 July 2010

Today from 10-12 an information session was held  in the Fox Family White Gloves Room on the topic of Indigenous family history resources located at the State Library of Queensland. Librarians from the John Oxley Library and the Family History Unit took participants through key collection items such as Birth, Death and Marriage Indexes, cemetery records, the Norman Tindale genealogy sheets and family trees that are part of the Margaret Lawrie Collection of Torres Strait Islander materials.

Myles Sinnamon, Family History Unit, speaks about resources of interest in the State Reference Library.

Thanks to all who attended this pilot session and to the staff from Community and Personal Histories who were present. In conjuction with the resources of the State Library of Queensland the Community and Personal Histories team are able to help Indigenous family history researchers gain access to government records held at the Queensland State Archives.

Future joint information sessions for the benefit of Indigenous family history researchers are planned with Community and Personal Histories, the Queensland State Archives and the National Archives of Australia.
