Impress Printmakers Studio is an enthusiastic and dedicated Brisbane group of Printmakers who offer a studio space and workshops for a broad range of printmaking processes.
Impress and Brisbane City Council are currently refurbishing the historic Substation No.8 at Kedron into a printmaking access studio and gallery. To celebrate the launch of the new studio the members of Impress are preparing a portfolio.
Each member of the group will create a print around the theme Regenerate which will be the subject of their inaugural exhibition in the new gallery. It is planned that two copies of the folio will be lodged with public collections and others will be sold to raise funds for the establishment of the new premises. Several ‘friends’ of the group have been invited to contribute a print to the portfolio and I was honoured to be invited to participate.
I chose to do an etching and Impress member Gwenn Tasker kindly offered to help me realise the print. We have spent a couple of Saturdays together in her home studio with Gwenn patiently guiding me through the processes of plate preparation and image creation, including the mysteries of hard ground, drypoint, aquatint and spitbite.
The printing itself was all left to Gwenn’s expertise.
Gwenn is represented in the ALA collection by Twelve labours, a book of etchings with a poem by Angela Gardner published by light-trap press in 2009.
Impress stalwart John Doyle was also working at Gwenn’s studio on his own print for the portfolio and had some helpful suggestions on mine.

I learned a great deal through this small adventure and am very grateful to Gwenn for the time and knowledge she shared with me and to Impress for the invitation to participate in the portfolio. I can’t wait to see the show even though I’m a little worried about comparisons that might be drawn between my print and those of the real artists!
