Greenbank Estate, Nundah, 1884 (Map of the Week)

This real estate map from 1884 advertises land for sale at the Greenbank Estate, located in the Brisbane suburb of Nundah. The allotments were situated along Toombul Terrace, Hamson Terrace and an unnamed road (now Buckland Road).

Extensive publicity was published in Brisbane newspapers.

"This splendid property occupies a portion of that grand ridge on which is erected the residence of H. Donkin, Esq, and runs side by side with grounds for more than 29 chains. The distance from Nundah Railway Station is just 26 chains, and it is therefore within five minutes' walk of that station…The water supply is of most excellent description, and is both abundant and pedmanent , as Kedron Brook is a constantly running stream." (Brisbane Courier, 10 July 1884, p.8)

A public auction was held at the site on the afternoon of 19 July 1884. The results of the sale were published in the Brisbane Courier newspaper.

"Mr John Cameron reports a brisk successful sale at Greenbank on Saturday. In little over an hour fifty-three lots were sold, realising the sum of ‎£1004. The company was not so numerous as frequently attends Saturday's sales, but there was a larger proportion of buyers than usual." (Brisbane Courier, 21 July 1884)

Find your Nundah house in the Frank and Eunice Corley collection

From the 1960s to the 1970s, Frank and Eunice Corley drove the suburban streets of Queensland in their pink Cadillac, taking photographs of houses and selling them to homeowners. A database containing over 61,000 photographs can now be searched and viewed online. There are 296 photographs for the suburb of Nundah.

The Corley collection is the focus of State Library of Queensland’s latest exhibition, Home: a suburban obsession, which runs from 7 December 2018 until 14 July 2019.
