The Edge Recording Studio refresh update

By Andrei Maberley | 8 September 2020

With ten years between major updates, refreshing such a well-used and established public access facility has been a priority for the Applied Creativity team over the COVID-19 enforced closure.

To make sure we are meeting your needs, we asked for feedback from all 500+ registered Recording Studio inductees in January 2020. From this survey we pulled together the equipment and software our members currently use most in Recording Studio.  Most importantly, we have a clear understanding of the kind of work our studio users are doing, and what we can do to keep the Recording Studio relevant.

The core of the Recording Studio will remain the same, based around a new Apple Pro (2019) and an Avid HD Native interface.  All the existing digital audio workstation software has been upgraded to the latest versions, and we’ve moved to a subscription model for our new plugins, which means studio users will have access to the entire range of Slate Digital, Plug-in Alliance and MCDSP plug-ins.  We’ve also added the Izotope Music Production Suite, with its audio restoration tools sure to come in handy.

The existing microphone and pre-amp collection will still be available, augmented with new Neumann, Rode and Shure microphones, including a pair of Shure SM-7b for matched podcasting recording.  We’ve added a 11 slot 500 series rack from JLM audio, loaded with two high quality microphone pre-amps.

Finally, the studio desk and racks have been replaced with furniture designed and built in the Fabrication Lab, along with a pair of speaker stands. If you like the look of the new fittings, the plans and instructions on how to build your own versions will be available with the re-opening of the Fabrication Lab.

With so many changes and new equipment, we’ll be updating our inductions and providing additional instructions and assistance for existing users to make sure you can get the most out of this exciting refresh.
